Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by peace, greenery, beautiful hills, and en route to ‘queen of hills’ Mussoorie. The winter capital of Uttrakhand, Dehradun, is located near the Himalayan foothills. There are various places to visit in Dehradun. Mussoorie, Robber’s Cave, Malsi Deer Park (now, known as Dehradun Zoo), Sahastradhara, Lacchiwala, FRI (Forest Research Institute), Mindrolling Monastery (Buddha Temple), Fun Valley, and many more.

History:
In many old scriptures, it is mentioned including the Skandapurana, Dehradun city, origins with the settlement of Guru Ram Rai in the village Dhamawala. The settlement in Punjabi was called ‘Dera’ from where Dehradun got its name.
After some time, it got into the hands of Nepali Kings as they took over the Garhwal kingdom and eventually lost it to the English. Dehradun was a town favored by the white men in British Raj. So, Dehradun saw many improvements like schools were made, the municipality was established, and railways were constructed. Dehradun was introduced to a whole new standard of living.
The famous IMA (Indian Military Academy), Forest Research Institute (FRI) and various big schools like the Doon School, RIMC, Welhams, etc. were given since then.

Now, Dehradun serves as the state’s provisional capital as well as the district headquarters of the Dehradun district. Now it is home to offices of various companies and Institutes like ONGC, Regional Remote Sensing Centre (RRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Survey of India, Forest Survey of India (FSI), Geological Survey of India and Wildlife Institute of India, Rashtriya Indian Military College, Uttarakhand Ayurveda University, Forest Research Institute (FRI), Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, and Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, etc.

Dehradun is also famous for the sweet fruit called litchi, the famous Basmati Rice, Strawberries, handmade woolens and many more. As it is the capital of Uttarakhand, the majority of Garhwalis resides in Dehradun. Pahadi dals and dishes are also available.
It is connected to Himalayan tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Chakrata, New Tehri, Uttarkashi, Harsil, Chopta – Tungnath, Auli. Some of the famous summer and winter trekking destinations like Dodital, Dayara Bugyal, Kedarkantha, Har Ki Dun for camping and Himalayan panoramic views. The Hindu holy cities like Haridwar and Rishikesh along with the Himalayan pilgrimage Chota Char Dham i.e. Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. It is one of the safest city in India. Dehradun is not so expensive city. Living in Dehradun is fairly inexpensive as compared to the other cities and metro cities.
